OCUF
celebrates 10 years of proudly supporting CUs
The
Ohio Credit Union Foundation is celebrating 10 years of
grantmaking in 2008 with a new information-filled Web
site, updated grant applications, and a grant award
notification cycle. The Foundation’s Web site has been
re-designed and features detailed descriptions of grant
and outreach opportunities, ideas and best practices, and how
to support OCUF through contributions and investments in
the Community Investment Fund. Read testimonials from
credit unions about how grants have helped them and their
communities, and see photos of Foundation grants at work
through outreach and financial education initiatives.
Grant applications have been overhauled to be more
convenient and easier to use. A new financial education
grant application has been added to accommodate credit unions
providing financial education to their members and
communities. The applications are conveniently available
as Word documents and .PDFs on the Foundation’s Web site.
The implementation of grantmaking cycles was
necessary to ensure timely processing of the increasing
numbers of applications being received by the Foundation.
In 1998, the Foundation's first year of grantmaking, $49,282
was awarded to credit unions for professional development,
outreach, and disaster relief. In 2007, it awarded
$210,000 in grantmaking. Grant applications will be accepted
throughout the year, but notification of awards will occur
on a quarterly basis.

Ohio CU Foundation is
funding leader of Biz Kid$ TV show
The
Ohio Credit Union Foundation (OCUF) recently became the
third highest contributor to Biz Kid$, a half-hour Public
Broadcasting Service (PBS) television series about
financial literacy and entrepreneurship sponsored by
America’s Credit Unions. Last week, the OCUF Board of
Trustees granted an additional $30,000 to the Biz Kid$
initiative, bringing the total to $60,000. All of Ohio’s
nine PBS stations are airing the show for upper elementary
and middle schools kids. Each episode includes companion
classroom curriculum materials designed by Junior
Achievement that can be used by teachers, parents, or
volunteers. “Biz Kid$ is terrific!” said Kathy Kanipe,
chair of OCUF and CEO of Parish FCU. “I encourage all Ohio
credit unions to check out the TV program and the
corresponding curriculum. Credit unions should be major
players in taking Biz Kid$ into classrooms across Ohio and
making educators aware of this tremendous resource.”
Presently, 132 credit unions, foundations, leagues, and
partners have paid $2.6 million for national underwriting
of each of the two seasons’ production, promotion, Web
site development and maintenance, and curriculum
development. For more information about Biz Kid$, air
times for your local PBS station, and financial education,
visit the link below.
Your credit union can gain exposure by sponsoring Biz Kid$
on your local Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) station.
Ohio Credit Union League Director of Media Relations
Patrick Harris suggests that credit unions and chapters
consider partnering and sharing the costs, which can vary
from station to station. Spread the word about Biz Kid$
within your credit union with customizable marketing
materials available on the National Credit Union
Foundation’s Web site. A digital and print brochure,
flyer, postcard, poster, and statement stuffer are
available. Contact Harris at (800) 486-2917 or
pharris@ohiocul.org if you’re interested in sponsoring
Biz Kid$ or would like assistance coordinating
sponsorships with PBS stations.

Foundation's grant dollars? In 2008, the Foundation will
grant $250,000 to Ohio credit unions for financial
education, professional
development, disaster relief, and community outreach initiatives. If your credit union is
thinking about starting or expanding its outreach programs,
going into your local schools with MoneyAndStuff,

media tour continues rolling along,
Planning for second round underway
To date,
the MoneyAndStuff media tour has covered seven of the
largest media markets in the state, and Dayton and
Columbus area events are planned for the coming weeks. The
majority of the media events have garnered print, radio,
and television coverage in their respective areas.
Additionally, local credit union leaders have appeared on
mid-day television news programs and local morning radio
shows in support of the financial education initiative
that provides free resources for teachers, parents, and
kids. Visit the MoneyAndStuff.info pressroom for a
sampling of the media coverage the tour has received.
In the coming weeks, events announcing MoneyAndStuff to
the public and media will be hosted in Dayton,
Springfield, and Columbus. The Columbus event will
feature two events: a news conference at the Ohio
Statehouse for legislators and political news
correspondents; and a news conference at a Columbus-area
school for local broadcast media outlets.
The Ohio Credit Union League will
be seeking locations in other markets to host
a second round of MoneyAndStuff media events. Target
markets include Athens,
Ashtabula, Cambridge, Chillicothe, Findlay, Mansfield,
Marietta, Marion, and Steubenville. Credit unions in these
areas that are working with local schools and would like
to help host an event should contact League Director of
Media Relations Patrick Harris at (800) 486-2917 or
pharris@ohiocul.org.
As MoneyAndStuff successes stories occur at the local
level, please inform the League so your efforts can be
shared with the media and other credit unions. Success
stories can include implementing the program in your local
schools, positive interaction with membership and their
children, promoting the initiative locally, and positive
response from your community. E-mail your stories to
League Outreach Manager Laura Busque at
lbusque@ohiocul.org or Patrick Harris.

Marching
Miles: Sign up and help a worthy cause
Fundraising
for the 2008 Ohio Credit Unions: Marching Miles for
Miracle Kids is underway and hopes to raise $100,000 for
the Children’s Miracle Network. Throughout April, credit
union leaders will march more than 191 miles from Toledo
to the Ohio Credit Union System ZENITH08 in
Columbus. Daily 10-mile
marches will take place from April 6-24, and many
legs begin and/or end at a credit union.
Credit union staff, volunteers, and members can become
involved in the fundraising walk-a-thon in two ways – as March walkers or contributors. Those interested in marching
can register online and create a personal fundraising Web
page describing their motivation for marching and
fundraising goals, and utilize a free e-mail tool to
solicit donations. The primary fundraising mechanism is
the Marching Miles Web site and donations made online are
given to the children’s hospital located within the
contributor’s region of the state.
Credit unions can take advantage of the online fundraising
tool by creating their own account and featuring it on their
homepage. Credit unions can also participate as sponsors, which
help finance the underwriting costs of the event. To
date, the fundraising efforts have earned $11,120 from 172
donors. Visit the link below to view the day-to-day
schedule, sign-up as a marcher, or to contribute.

Cutting-edge
outreach initiatives from around the U.S.
Financial education -- a core plank in the credit union
mission -- is an important endeavor that credit
unions throughout the nation are embarking upon. The
following programs have received national recognition
for their innovativeness, impact, and community collaboration.
Oregon State University Federal Credit
Union,
in Corvallis, Oregon, has youth programs for children and
teens that provide education partnership grants, support
National Endowment for Financial Education (NEFE) materials
for middle and high schools, provide classroom presentations,
and offer two internships. The credit union’s efforts exposed
nearly 3,000 students to financial education in one year.
Oregon State University FCU also provides financial education
classes at area schools that serve a large population of
at-risk youth. Programs offered include checking account
management, identity theft management, household budgeting,
and credit card use. The credit union also participated in job
fairs and college student orientation programs to ensure that
students have the information needed to live a financially fit
lifestyle.
Sonoma County Grange Credit Union
in Santa Rosa, California, embarked upon a county-wide
effort to expose high school student to the NEFE High School
Financial Planning Program curriculum and guest speakers from
the financial world. The credit union collaborated with Sonoma
County 4-H to present "Let's Talk Money," an 18-hour class
held in six three-hour sessions. Future plans include working
with district administrators to create high school graduation
credits for the 4-H project. The credit union's financial education efforts
are not limited to high school students. It also participates
in an educational fair that reaches 4,000 elementary school
students each year. To strengthen the credit union’s
partnership with Sonoma County 4-H, it offers a zero-interest
loan program for 4-H and Future Farmers of America (FFA)
projects, and awards $50 share accounts to winners of 4-H Gold
Stars and FFA Proficiency Awards.
Virginia Beach Schools Federal Credit
Union’s
financial education efforts focus on promoting the NEFE
program and teacher education. The credit union offers a
monthly electronic newsletter to teachers that keeps them
apprised of financial education trends and available
resources. Monthly seminars on financial skills are held for
teachers and the public. Teachers who attend the seminars earn continuing education points and received classroom
materials. In addition to educating teachers, the credit union
offers "behind the scene" tours to students, classroom
presentations, and two Web-based financial education programs.
Upcoming
educational scholarship opportunities
Professional and volunteer development is not just for credit
unions with large training budgets. Federal and state
regulations require credit unions to provide for the education
and training needs of their directors, committee members, senior
management, and employees. Professional development
scholarship grants are available through the Ohio Credit Union
Foundation (OCUF), and every credit union is encouraged to
take advantage of opportunities to enhance member service,
increase employee knowledge, and improve the bottom line.
Grants are awarded based on need, and can be used for an array of educational programs,
including conferences, seminars, workshops, Webinars, eSchools,
and self-study programs. If you are interested in applying for
a grant, visit the Foundation Web site at the link below for
applications and information, or contact League Outreach
Manager Laura Busque at (800) 486-2917 or

Grants Spotlight
Professional Development:
Jason Parkins of Millstream Area Credit Union received an Ohio
Credit Union Foundation (OCUF) professional development grant
to attend the National Credit Union Foundation’s Development
Education Training, April 3-9, in Madison, WI. The grant will
provide Parkins with an opportunity to experience the
relevance of People Helping People at an innovative level.
He is looking forward to “experiencing this life-changing
event and excited about using the Development Education
principals when serving credit union members.”
Outreach:
A credit union outreach committee in the Greater Toledo Area
has received an outreach grant to assist with the development
of the Latino Community Credit Union. The grant funds will be
used to secure a professional grant writer, who will procure
funds to assist with the development of the new credit union.
The Latino population in Southern Toledo has grown during
recent years and most of the population is unbanked; thus,
they are forced to pay exorbitant fees for check cashing
services and remittances. The coalition of credit unions has joined forces to
assist VIVA, a community group serving local Latinos,
in developing the Latino Community Credit Union. The credit
unions
have assisted with the charter application, business plan, and
training. “The presence of a Latino credit union will enhance
the quality of life for the individuals that live in the
Southern Toledo area and the Ohio Credit Union Foundation is
honored to participate in a project that will improve lives
for so many people,”
according to Ohio Credit Union League Outreach Manager Laura
Busque.
Financial Education: The
Northeast Chapter received an OCUF financial education grant
to assist with the “Bringing Out the Millionaire in You”
seminar it is hosting April 29. The seminar will help
credit union members and community residents become savvy
financial consumers. The 2007
seminar hosted by the chapter, entitled “Staying on Track With
Your Money,” was well received by the 40 participants, and
the group hopes that this year's seminar will be as successful.
